affordable makeup tutorial

I’ve been full of inspiration lately and when I received some new products in the mail (as pr-samples) I couldn’t wait to play with them. In many of my tutorials I’ve been using more expensive products and palettes, so this tutorial is made with more affordable (but lovely) brands.

I actually used mainly just four products + lashes and mascara. All the products are listed at the end of this post. The big star here was definitely the NYX Beauty School Dropout palette though, which can be used on face, eyes and brows.

This look is a fun way of using some color without going all crazy. Let me know what you think!

face tutorial

  1. Apply the foundation using a damp beauty blender. Milani’s foundation has concealer in it too so you can use it as your concealer too. I applied one layer to my whole face and then did some spot-concealing. I applied it under my eyes too and a touch of another concealer on top of that for my eyes. Set the base lightly with a powder.
  2. Contour, bronze and blush. Below is a photo where you can see where I applied those three things. When using a full coverage foundation it’s important to bring some color to your face so be sure to apply a touch of bronzer and/or a blush at least, if you’re not into the whole thing.
  3. Fill in your brows using a brow brush and suitable powders for your tones. I mixed grey, light brown and a darker brown color from my NYX palette.Contour bronzer blush placement

Contouring is for sculpting: creating shadows on your face and emphasizing for example cheekbones as I did here. That’s why you should use a matte shade. Bronzer is for warming up the face and making it look a bit tanned. It can be a warm color with some shimmer. Blush makes you look young, fresh and healthy.

  1. Apply primer and set it with a powder.
  2. Apply white eye shadow to your lid and on your inner corner. Use tapping motions to make it intense.
  3. Cut the crease. First use a lighter shade and sketch the right shape. Blend well.
  4. Darken the crease with a darker color. Try to keep the line between white and brown clean(ish), blend carefully upwards.
  5. Line your lash line with pink eye shadow. Apply the pink on your lower lash line as well, that’s where the pink should be the brightest.
  6. Create a wing using a wet brush and black eye shadow. The black hides a bit of the pink on your lid, but that’s the idea. It shows a bit though and looks cool (wow, such creativity, much artistic).
  7. Apply a mascara and or lashes of your choosing.

I made a little paint-version, where you can maybe see better the color placement. I blended the brown crease colors upwards kinda like a cat eye. I also blended it in the outer corner just so that it almost meets the white lid color.

Finish the look with a pink lipstick. This was my first time wearing Milani’s Fruit Punch, but I think I’m already a bit obsessed.

Acne update | Progress after 2 months of Apocyclin

adult acne my progress

It’s so hard to evaluate the skin by just looking in the mirror. If that was the case I would still feel like my skin isn’t any better. Luckily I took some pictures too so I know if the skin improving or not. And looking at the photos I have to say that there is improvement! Last month my skin was kinda worse than it was when I started the medication so I’m so happy to be going forward now.

I still have some inflamed pimples, but my skin is doing much better than last month. I have some acne scarring on the sides of my chin, so the situation there may look the same as it was, but some of the redness is just scarring.

Another good way of evaluating the skin is using people that see you often, but not daily. My sisters were complimenting my skin at the dinner table and how even and clear it was. Yay!

apocyclin acne

My skin today 2 months + 1 day of Apocyclin. That annoying red pimple on my cheek is finally getting better – it’s smaller now and smooth.

About the side-effects I have nothing new to report really. The stomach situation is what it is and I still feel a bit sick on the mornings every once in a while. I notice that my stomach is more sensitive than ever and now that I don’t eat that much wheat or sugar, it instantly reacts to those foodstuffs (is that a correct English word?) quite strongly.

My acne progress from February (1 week of Apocyclin) – March (1 month) – April (2 months).

February – April. The first pic shows my skin at it’s worst, before starting the medication. My acne is really inflamed there. On the April pic you can see that even though there’s redness, my acne isn’t inflamed anymore and some of that redness is just scarring.

Another thing I’ve noticed that I’m not sure what to blame though is that my hands are super dry. It’s not even that cold anymore outside so I don’t think it’s the weather. But now I get to use more hand cream and I actually just bought a new one that I love, ha.

Altogether I feel a bit better about my skin. I think I’ll be eating the antibiotics for at least another month, if not two. Let’s hope my skin continues to get better!

What comes to food & acne, I’m writing another post about the topic, because it’s something that I’ve been thinking about a lot. But for those of you that are wondering: I’m avoiding dairy, wheat and sugar at the moment. Those are the main things people say they get acne from. Even though my acne is hormonal, I still want to boost the recovery with clean eating.

Thanks for the support and comments – it’s always nice to know I’m not alone with this.
